The Origins of Shadows, the Kickstarter Theme Song

Good morning my Wolf Pack!

My apologies for sending this update out so late! I meant to send it out yesterday evening, but I had a very eventful one. We had our first snow storm of the season here in Western Pennsylvania. The storm caused my 45 minute commute to become a 2 hour one, which caused me to be late to dinner for my dad's birthday. By the time our nightly rituals with the kids and chores had ended it was already late when I started writing this update, so I decide to finish it this morning instead of rush it. So this update is a little different than my previous updates. I wanted to share a little bit about how my passion for comic books often crossover with my passion for music, and how a friend of mine helped me write the lyrics to the Night Wolf Kickstarter theme song, Shadows.

In a recent newsletter that I sent out right before the Kickstarter started I talked about my personal origin story and how my learning disabilities launched my creative career. In the newsletter I talked in depth about my childhood struggle with learning to read because of my Attention Deficit Disorder and Dyslexia, and how my mom came up with a solution. Can you guess what it was? That's right comic books! That's how I learned to read despite my Dyslexia. However, music was the cure to my Attention Deficit Disorder. Now, I'm not going to get into the whole newsletter. I want to focus mainly on the part where my passion for comics and music crossover. As I said, comic books were a key factor in helping me read, but music, oddly  enough, was a big help as well in helping me to focus. I learned by  accident, during my childhood, while I was grounded from TV and videos,  but not music and comic books, that if I had music playing, it would  drown out the background noises. Having a constant rhythmic noise, helps  me to focus. Music also was a creative outlet for me. From 2000 to 2007, I was the lead singer of a hard rock band called, Crimson Dawn. My fellow band mates were Lead Guitarist - Paul Bauer, Bass Guitarist - Tim Bracken, Rhythm Guitarist - Justin Booth, & Drummer - Brandon Blatt.

Does the name Crimson Dawn sound familiar to you? It might, if you have ever seen my other comic book titles on my website. There is one in particular is also called, Crimson Dawn. I'm sure you have already guessed that this is no mere coincidence,  but which came first? The answer, is that my comic book character came first.  My band mates and I were sitting around in my room trying to decide on a  band name, while I was drawing the logo for my comic series. None of us  could agree on a name until I finished the logo. I held up the logo and  said, "How about Crimson Dawn?" Everyone loved it, and so we had our  band name. My band life often crossed paths with  my comic book obsession. I wrote all the song lyrics and drew all of our album covers, band merch, and show flyers in comic book fashion. It's funny how things have come full circle, since I am now using one of our old tracks, Shadows, as the theme song for the Night Wolf Kickstarter video.

The reason I chose Shadows was because I felt that it really fit in with the events of Night Wolf. Basically, the song is about someone struggling with events in their life leaving this person feeling angry and isolated. Much like what's happening to Rodney as his life is changed forever upon discovering he was born a werewolf. I also picked this song as a tribute to a friend of mine, Airman John Derry, who co-wrote the lyrics with me back in 2005 just before he passed away in a car accident just months before his service in the U.S. Air Force was over. John was Crimson Dawn's biggest fan and one of my best friends. In memory of John, I named my the alter-ego of my character, Crimson Dawn, after John and gave him a similar backstory. I also have John's initials tattooed on my arm. I felt since this past Monday was Veteran's Day it was an appropriate time to share some of his story in honor of his service.

Since the Kickstarter video only shares a small portion of the song before it fades in the the background I have been thinking about posting a video of Shadows in it entirety. Would that be of any interest to you? Please click here to let me know on Facebook!
